In this episode of Rolling Reflections Pete takes a look at some competition footage. Pete is fighting his first ever no gi tournament and gets the opportunity to roll with Dan Simmler. Hear how it went as he breaks down the match.
On every Jiu Jitsu forum I've been on, once every other month (or so) a thread pops up with "how many gis do you have?" People (myself, unfortunately, included) boast about having 8, 10, and 12 gis. Twelve gis? Really? I train hours and hours a week, but let's be honest. I probably don't need more than four gis, much less 12.
BJJ Training
First off, I’m calling you out. You’ve struggled with keeping control of some new white belt in class. It’s OK to admit it! Just because someone hasn’t trained in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu before doesn’t mean that they're not tougher than a bag of hammers!
We've all gassed before. Things are going along fine and all of a sudden, you are completely out of energy and can't do anything but lie on the mat like a dead fish. Jiu-Jitsu requires great cardiovascular conditioning and many jiu-jitsu fighters run or bike as part of their training. This strengthens the heart and improves its ability to pump blood through the body. It also improves the capacity of your lungs, another critical part of the cardiovascular system. As the entire system becomes stronger, your heart beats slower and moves more blood per beat.
There’s no quicker way to poison a Jiu-Jitsu school or club than to bring in politics, religion, and external drama. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu attracts people from all walks of life with views across all religious and political spectrums. And we all have problems like stress from work, financial struggles, and family dramas. But these things can’t be allowed to come into class.
This week we're going to take a look at Passing The Guard, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Details and Techniques by Ed Beneville and Tim Cartmell. We have previously reviewed a different book by Ed Beneville in this video segment.
The player below is an audio recording of Bill and Pete discussing the book, there is an echo on the call at one point in the call so it wasn't able to be used for a video review but you can listen if you like, it covers basically the same points as the written review.
This week the guys take a look at Gracie Bullyproof, a DVD set designed to teach kids how to use Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to overcome bullies.
In his first Expert of the Month technique, Gregor Gracie shares a clock choke variation when your opponent is in turtle guard and keeping you from getting a second hand in position for the choke.
BJJ Weekly reports on the first of what will hopefully be many road trips to film the Expert of the Month segment. This month’s expert, Gregor Gracie, trains at the Renzo Gracie Academy in New York City.
This week the guys take a look at another Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gi, the Atama Gold Weave. This is the new version of the gold weave, find out how it stacks up.
