This month we are excited to feature Phil Migliarese as expert of the month. Phil is a 4th degree Relson Gracie blackbelt. He’s been training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for over 20 years. He’s also the creator of Yoga for Fighters, Jiu-Jitsu Share, Jiu-Jitsu Matrix, and he runs Balance Studio in Philadelphia with his brother Ricardo.
It's a good thing we're not really journalists... it would be almost impossible to stay objective about getting a chance to roll with Marcelo Garcia.
Phil Migliarese shows us a great technique for rolling over an opponent with a really strong base in turtle position starting with his "Yoga Hook". This technique ends up with a nice arm bar finish.

My never quit moment came three years ago when I was still in college. I was rolling with a much heavier rookie before class to give him some pointers when I slipped and dislocated my shoulder completely. I had to spend that night in the hospital.
My name is Andy Lushman and I first started training BJJ two years ago when I moved from Canada to Switzerland. My story tells of my discovery of BJJ and the difficulties I encountered while training abroad. Below you will find my story which, in my opinion, is full of never quit moments...
I’ve seen a lot of different jiu-jitsu video sites, but there’s nothing else out there quite like MGinAction. It’s not just a video technique library; it's really a jiu-jitsu learning system. I used MGinAction to study a couple of sweeps that I was struggling with for this review. I am now hitting them pretty regularly in practice after just a week. In this review, I’m going to give you an in-depth look at the strengths and weaknesses of MGinAction.
In this segment of Rolling Reflections Marcelo Garcia shares his thoughts an a recent roll with one of his black belt instructors at his academy in NYC.
In this segment Phil Migliarese shares his concepts of back control in Jiu Jitsu. Phil discusses how he likes to use a modified hook to avoid potential foot locks as well as give him some additional options for control. Phil also shows how to open an opponent who is protecting his neck and keeping his elbows tight, and how to control the upper body with your legs.
In this BJJ Power Play Luigi Mondelli shares some details for finishing the cross choke from mount without getting swept or losing position.
All Jiu-Jitsu matches start from standing, but at a lot of schools rolling starts from the knees. Some traditional Judo throws and take downs can be extremely effective and put you in a better position than pulling guard if completed successfully. In this episode of Judo for Jiu-Jitsu Jimmy Pedro, 4x Olympian and coach of the US Olympic Judo team shares a really nice technique that you can put to work in your game.
